New Cosmic on Cuba St is open for business

Cosmic is pleased to announce a new store, a new name and a new concept that has opened on Cuba Mall, (beside the Bucket Fountain) Wellington. Following the Christchurch earthquake which devastated Cosmic’s flagship store on High Street & also the Palms Mall store, Cosmic Corner owner Mark Carswell was faced with some tough decisions as many business owners in Canterbury have been. Instead of dwelling on the devastation however, Mark looked for the silver lining in the dark cloud. He saw having both Christchurch stores out of action as a catalyst for change and development. The right opportunity presented itself in the form of the vacant space at 97 Cuba St.

“ As well as creating something positive out of the difficult situation in Christchurch and keeping my staff busy and motivated, this move is essentially about Cosmic growing up.” says Mark. “The current Cuba St store is a small store, only 60 square metres. We have outgrown that now – this new space is 430 metres square which allows for so much more possibilities and creative vision.”

Cosmic Corner has also re-branded and will now simply be known as ‘COSMIC’. Stage 1 of the new Cosmic identity began today with the opening of the new Cuba St store.

With such a huge space to fill Mark had no shortage of ideas for the new Cosmic store. Stage 1 will see the shop expand to include a huge collection of eclectic fashion items, vintage sunnies and jewellery, alternative literature, skateboards, headphones, Lomo cameras, NZ Music, crystals, hemp based body products. This is  alongside the good old Cosmic dependables – the quirky, crazy toys, gifts, incense, piercing jewellery, pipes & legal highs.

Inspired by the city of Amsterdam, which incidentally is one of Mark’s favourite spots to visit, the most notable development will be the Amsterdam Coffeeshop which will be open 24 hours over weekends. “Our Amsterdam Coffeeshop will be the first in New Zealand to sell legal smoking mix. I like Amsterdam’s mature attitude to freedom of the individual to buy coffee and something to smoke… and it’s a beautiful place.” says Mark.

As an opening gift, when customers buy 10 coffees from Cosmic’s Amsterdam Coffeeshop they will get an 11th coffee free and also go into the draw to win a trip for 2 to Amsterdam, which will include return airfares, Accomodation, pocket money for coffeeshop visits, bike hire and a special map from Mark directing you where to go to have a good time.

The most exciting thing about the new store is the stage, which will take pride of place at the back of the store. Cosmic have always been music lovers and staunch supporters of NZ music. The stage will be used to support and showcase local musicians, touring artists and DJs with in-store performances, which goes hand in hand with Cosmic’s ticketing outlet www.cosmicticketing.co.nz and their extensive stock of primarily NZ Music.

The stage will get a good warm up at the Opening Party on Friday 22nd July with the Nomad (playing his legendery back catalogue), The Transistors (punk rockers from Chch), and 4 Cosmic DJ’s Insomniac, Psilo, Schille.m and Sirius.

“I see Cosmic as a multi-faceted alternative department store and information centre… in a way it is a one-stop shop where all sorts of Wellington people can come in, check out fashion & accessories, buy tickets to events, grab their favourite legal highs and now coffee and munchies. I’m really excited about this new Wellington store and the future of Cosmic in this fine city.” says Mark.

It’s a huge team effort, and Mark wishes to thank all the Cosmic Crew, especially Cosmic buyers, Ruby and Leila who inspired Mark post earthquake to take a chance and see Cosmic evolve. Also, many thanks to Dirk from Fire and Ice Shopfitters and all the people who made the project happen.
